Should I See a Chiropractor for Lower Back Pain?

In this blog, I will explain what happens in the spine which causes lower back pain. Including the likely symptoms sufferers experience, and what we do at The Back Doctor, Haywards Heath to resolve this.

Mechanical back pain, commonly associated with locking spinal joints, is a classic injury of the spine that causes muscle spasms and therefore pain in the lower back and other areas of the spine.

The anatomy of the lower back

The spinal joints are the interlocking joints between each and every one of the spinal bones. These bones slide over each other, enabling the spine to move. Therefore allowing us to perform actions such as throwing a ball.

The spinal bones enable the body and limbs to move into different positions, whilst providing a stable platform to generate force.

What causes lower back pain?

If your spinal bones are not moving and sliding over one another, they are instead fixated and jammed together. This results in a structural back problem, affecting overall movement.

The spinal joints, also known as facet joints, can also cause back pain. They are delicate structures of a sliding surface that slide into a grove of another spinal bone.

If spinal joints are damaged, they are irreplaceable. This is because the mechanism for healing bone is to add more bone. Meaning it would be a rough surface instead of a smooth surface to slide over.

What causes a muscle spasm?

The body’s innate intelligence generates a muscle spasm to restrict movement. This protects the area and create an inflammation site for healing if it believes your spine is at risk of being damaged.

Back pain relief

When back sufferers visit a chiropractor or an osteopath and they hear the clicking and the popping in their spine, this is their joints making this sound.

They are gently being nudged back into their groves, and the displaced air in the grove causes this sound. This usually results in an instant release of pain as well as improved movement.

The Back Doctor – A back pain relief clinic

At The Back Doctor, we will, first of all, take the time to distinguish between mechanical lower back pain, caused by a spinal joint, with a structural problem, such as a disc bulge. This is to ensure it is addressed with the best cause of action.

Many of our patients will have back pain as a result of lifting, bending, or twisting, but not all back pain will come on instantly. If however left untreated, this can be accompanied by nerve pain in the leg.

Treatment plan

Treatment is fairly simple for a muscle spasm caused by locking spinal bones.

We will safely and gently free the joint, which will result in the muscle spasm naturally turning off.

If however the injury is aggravated again, the spasm will return. To prevent this from happening, we would look to identify what is causing the injury and recommend ways to reduce these triggers.

This will help speed up the healing process and avoid further muscle spasms and the pain from returning.
