The word holistic to me means viewing the body as an interconnected living being. So, what is a holistic chiropractor?
When I say interconnected, I mean many individual parts working together in a shared economy. They all affect each other and cannot exist independently of the whole, or indeed be understood without reference to the whole.
That’s to say our body and our health is in fact more than the sum of its parts, and each part cannot be looked at in isolation, as a means of diagnosis.
Holistic health is viewing the person as a whole, by taking into account their biology, mental health, and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of the disease.
When a patient is treated holistically at The Back Doctor, these background triggers are assessed as possible causes of the symptoms – treating the cause and clearing the symptoms.
The first thing a Chiropractor needs to consider before being referred to as holistic is a set of principles that are holistic. Here is mine:
David Tennison’s Holistic Principles
The power that makes the body heal itself.
- If you cut yourself or cause a bruise, what heals them? The answer is, inside your body is an innate intelligence that will heal you, without asking that conscious part of you now that is reading this. These healing responses are automatic, and a holistic Chiropractic health professional encourages them.
Our bodies are interconnected parts that combine to be more than the sum of their parts.
- Your body is approximately 60 trillion cells, and many more atoms and molecules. These parts of you are smaller than the eye can see, but under a microscope, they are like a person with their own needs. They rely on each other to function.
Symptoms are signals from the body to let us know there is a problem.
- Contrary to the current healthcare system, a holistic Chiropractor views pain as the body raising a question to your conscious. Instead of prescribing pain medication that only masks the symptoms, Holistic Chiropractors will find the cause, which in turn will resolve the problem.
- If you ignore or mask the symptom, the problem will only get worse or take longer to heal, which could cause other mental and emotional side effects.
- Resolve the cause with a holistic treatment plan, which in turn resolves the symptom.
- Diet and exercise are more powerful than medication for chronic pain and diseases.
Our beliefs, thoughts, and emotions reflect our physical health (health comes from within).
- Your mindset is a reflection of your posture. Resolving your pain is the first and last step in your recovery. We initially focus on encouraging a healthy mindset.
- Prevention is better than a cure (proactive instead of reactive).
Belief in a higher power is good for our health and guides our lives to a higher purpose
- Believe this or not, people that believe in a higher power (whatever that may mean to you personally) are happier, healthier and they live longer. Whether this means religion, spirituality, or mother nature to you, personally I believe there is intelligence in the universe, just in the same way our body is intelligent.
