What Is a Sports Chiropractor?

Sports Chiropractor

At The Back Doctor, we consider ourselves a sports chiropractor. In the sense that we whole heartily support patients being involved in sports-specific training and competition.

Working with athletes and sports fanatics means we work with a range of sports related injuries. To improve your athletic performance we recommend coming to visit us, and see how we can help you achieve your best with our sports chiropractic care.

As part of our goal to help patients with their fitness goals, David Tennison has designed the fitness progression program. This consists of diagnosing where you are at and then putting together a support plan and chiropractic treatment to reach your fitness goals.

The four levels of exercise progression are:

  1. Corrective phase
  2. Regular exercise
  3. High-intensity training
  4. Sports specific training and competition

Fitness Progression Model – The First Step

The first step in The Back Doctors’ fitness progression model is to improve spinal alignment and overall posture.

The further you are away from these ideals will determine what advice we give you.

If you are in the corrective phase, we recommend low-impact exercises and avoid anything that aggravates your injury.

Your spinal and postural alignment needs to improve before progressing; therefore high impact activity could worsen your injury or cause another injury.

Our remedial-based exercises will support you back to full recovery, by replacing the range of motion and strength of joints to prepare you for more intense regular exercise.

Fitness Progression Model – The Second Step

The second step is, that once spinal alignment and overall posture have improved, the intensity of exercise can be increased.

By that, we mean improving cardiovascular fitness, such as running or cycling. We generally want you to focus on low-impact activities before moving on to high-intensity training and impacts.

It’s a good idea to build up endurance in the muscles to consolidate the alignment changes.

Fitness Progression Model – The Third Step

The third step is when you introduce high-intensity training, consisting of strength, power, and endurance. At this stage, it will be more available to you and safe.

This could include increasing weights, cross-fit, and circuit training. Your body is more durable because of correct alignment, and your cardiovascular fitness has improved.

We will teach you to become aware of the difference between the feeling of fitness gains and niggling injuries.

Before, you may have been confusing the two. Learning to know the difference will prevent a recurrence.

Fitness Progression Model – The Fourth Step

The fourth stage is a sports-specific stage, which means participating in competitive activity.

In stage one, competing at level four is a high risk of injury. With our expert knowledge, we will be able to give you the correct advice so that you can go through the levels all the way to sports-specific.

The sports-specific level needs the foundation of the others before progressing here, or you are risking unnecessary and foreseen injury.
